Which Way for EU–China Relations?

Partner, competitor and systemic rival all at once, the EU’s China policy involves difficult trade-offs between trade, security and values. China is one of the EU’s largest trading partners, but the relationship is increasingly marked by mutual distrust, trade disputes and geopolitical rivalry. 

In response to China’s state-led industrial policy and growing overcapacity, the EU has taken and announced a range of measures, including tariffs on certain Chinese goods, scrutiny of subsidies and investments, and strategies to reduce dependencies in critical value chains. At the same time, geopolitical pressure is mounting, from China’s support for Russia to the rivalry between the US and China. Companies risk being caught in the middle. 

The seminar features Jens Eskelund, President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China and Managing Director of Maersk China, and Gunnar Wiegand, currently at the German Marshall Fund and for seven years Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific at the European External Action Service.
