Occupational gender segregation is a prominent feature in the Swedish labor market. One property that commonly distinguish men’s and women’s work is the math intensity and women remain notably underrepresented in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. Part of the issue lies in the fact that many girls do not perceive themselves as proficient in STEM subjects.
Research indicates that girls lose interest at a young age, largely due to stereotypes and biases surrounding STEM and societal expectations regarding the characteristics of a person interested in STEM. How can more girls be attracted to pursue careers in STEM?
Anne Ardila Brenøe has together with Melanie Wasserman conducted a study investigating how perceptions of mathematical proficiency and suitability influence career choices among Swiss students applying for apprenticeships, exploring potential gender differences. During the seminar the research findings will be presented, followed by panel discussion.
The seminar is part of the seminar series Gender equality in the 2020s, a collaboration between SNS and the Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI) at Stockholm University.
The seminar will be held in English.
