Migration and integration policy are on top of the political agenda. The SNS seminar series Forum for Integration Policy aims to increase understanding for conditions and challenges for successful integration.
The project focuses on exchange of knowledge, ideas and experiences between business, the public sector, academia and other relevant societal actors. The seminars combine Swedish and international inquiries into this area of research. The most significant obstacles to successful integration will be analyzed – and possible solutions will be discussed.
Current topics for upcoming seminars are the reception of asylum seekers, housing, labor market policies, and the education system. Some of the questions that seminar participants will discuss include:
The seminar series is planned to run for three years, between 2017-2019.

During 2015-2016, Sweden welcomed many asylum-seekers. What effect did this have on the consumption of news about refugees and their plight? What influence can people’s sources of information have on their attitudes concerning immigration and policies connected to migration? These questions and many more were discussed during a seminar with Eleonora Freddi, Assistant Professor of Economics at Tilburg University, Jonas Hinnfors, Professor in Political Science at the University of Gothenburg, Johan Lindell, Associate Professor in Media and Communication Studies at Karlstad University and Patrik Vuorio, development strategist in the municipality of Järfälla.
It takes approximately nine years for half of the refugee-population in Sweden to establish themselves on the labor market. What does the situation look like in our neighboring countries? And what can we learn from each other? Topics such as these were discussed during the seminar, where Bernt Bratsberg, senior researcher at the Frisch Center in Oslo, Marie Louise Schultz-Nielsen, senior researcher at the Rockwool Foundation in Copenhagen and Olof Åslund, secretary general at the Institute for Evaluation of Labour Market and Education Policy, and Professor of Economics at Uppsala University participated.
On January 31 2017, Mette Foged, economist at the University of Copenhagen, launched a new SNS report: “Effects of Immigration on Native Workers’ Wages in Denmark”. The study analyzes the mobility of native workers, wages and employment in response to the influx of refugees to Denmark from 1995–2003. Lars Calmfors, Professor Emeritus in International Economics at Stockholm University, and Pieter Bevelander, Professor in International Migration and Ethnical Relations at Malmö University, commented on the report.
