What policy instruments are most effective in terms of reducing the gender gap on the labour market? Professor of Economics Barbara Petrongolo presents her research on the economic consequences of family policies. Åsa Lindhagen, Sweden’s new Minister for Gender Equality, also participates in the seminar.
The Swedish debate on policies for gender equality on the labour market today mostly focuses on parental leave. Traditionally, reforms such as expanded childcare and economic incentive structures related to taxation have been important.
Barbara Petrongolo, Professor of Economics at Queen Mary University of London, has studied how different types of family policies affect women’s outcome on the labour market. She analyses the impact of subsidized childcare and different types of parental leave systems on women’s employment and income. She also examines the role of so called in-work benefits – incentive schemes tied to employment that apply to both men and women – in this context.
Arizo Karimi, Postdoctoral researcher at the Economics department, Uppsala University and Uppsala Center for Labor Studies, comments from a Swedish academic perspective.
Åsa Lindhagen, Sweden’s new Minister for Gender Equality, participates to share the government’s views on different policy instruments.
