Moreover, a large portion of this variation remains unexplained even after taking a number of different factors into account. This represents a problem as the overall goal is to provide health care based on need and on equal terms throughout the country. According to health economist Naimi Johansson in a new SNS report, a national primary care register is needed to come to grips with the scope and causes of unjustified differences.

A historical analysis This publication puts the increasing regional differences in the last 30 years in a historical perspective. For this purpose, new data series are presented of GDP per capita for Swedish counties between 1860 and 2010; it has previously been impossible to make these kinds of comparisons. The driving forces behind the historical patterns are analysed and the current situation is discussed in light of these.
