Does democracy have a future in a world of crumbling borders and increasing complexity? How does democracy function in a multiple level political entity, such as the European Union? And what does the politicians think of the quality of democracy on a global, Nordic, national, regional and local scale?
These are some questions that are answered in SNS 1997 Democratic Audit of Sweden. The major issue is how democracy can find proper forms of operation in the New World Order. This book examines the performance of democracy at multiple levels of the European Union in comparison with national and local Swedish politics. This report takes democratic theory as its point of departure and constructs an ideal of democracy based on three conerstones: popular, constitutional and effective government.
