The UN Guiding Principles (UNGPs) on Business and Human Rights were unanimously endorsed in 2011. It was the first time the UN had issued official guidance to states and firms on their respective duties and responsibilities in relation to business and human rights and the principles were placed into the domain of “soft law”. The expectations set out in the UNGPs are now informing the development of national and supranational hard law requirements in a growing number of jurisdictions.

We welcome you to a seminar with Caroline Rees, president and co-founder of Shift, the leading center of expertise on the UNGPs on Business and Human Rights. Caroline Rees was the lead advisor to the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on business and human rights, Professor John Ruggie, and was deeply involved in the drafting of the Guiding Principles during the consultation period 2005-2011.

Caroline Rees will talk about how the UNGPs are informing the development of new regulations on due diligence and sustainability reporting, including within the EU, and shaping investors’ analysis of companies’ ‘social’ performance. She will give examples of how businesses are embedding the Guiding Principles into their operations and value chains to support improved decision-making and more sustainable practices.
